Something went terribly wrong for a daring young man and upcoming Bachelorette contestant Eric Hill.

The 31-year-old grew up in Citrus Heights, but spent the last few years traveling the world. On Sunday, he suffered an accident while paragliding in Utah. His family said Hill's parachute suddenly collapsed and he crashed into the side of a mountain.

Hill spent four days in the hospital with traumatic brain injuries. He died Wednesday morning.

"It's a crushing blow to get this kind of news for anybody. It's been hard," Hill's older brother Scott Hill said.

Eric Hill was an adventure seeker who enjoyed traveling. But it's that intrepid nature that cost him his life. Hill was in the midst of trying to break a world record. He was on a mission to visit all 195 U.N. recognized countries in less than three years. He was documenting his journey on his website The Global Odyssey.

Eric Hill was accomplishing this task while also being a contestant on ABC's reality series The Bachelorette.

In a statement, producers of the show said, "We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic passing of our friend, Eric Hill. Eric inspired us every day with his passion, his courage and his adventurous spirit, and for that we are very thankful."

While the family is heartbroken over the loss, they say they find some solace knowing Eric Hill passed away doing what he loved.

They set up an online fundraising account to help with funeral costs at http://bit.ly/1hqrPXy
