Gwar Frontman David Brockie Died Of Heroin Overdose - MTV.com

Gwar frontman David Brockie's death this March was caused by an accidental heroin overdose, the Virginia State Medical Examiner's Office has announced.

Arkuie Williams of the state's medical examiner's office confirmed to Reuters on Tuesday (June 3) that the 50-year-old died of "acute heroin toxicity and the manner of death is accident."

The singer was found dead in his Richmond, Virginia, home by his roommate on March 23.

Brockie was one of the founding members of the costumed heavy-metal group in 1984, and stuck with the group for 30 years and thirteen albums as the main creative voice. He was known among his fans as his onstage alter-ego Oderus Urungus, an extraterrestrial warrior, who, like the others, was determined to bring humanity to a violent end. The band was known for their theatrical and often gruesome shows, ones that included elaborate costumes like Brockie's "meat masks" and monsters that terrorized the audience.

Despite being known for their over-the-top shows, the band got two Grammy nods in their 30-year run — one nomination for Best Metal Performance in 1995 and another for Best Long Form Music Video in 1993.
