Benedict Cumberbatch will be going to the war for his next big screen outing, as he signs up for Iraq set drama 'The Yellow Birds'.
The 37-year-old Sherlock star will play a sergeant who takes two young soldiers, played by Tye Sheridan and BAFTA Rising Star winner Will Poulter, under his wing as they are deployed.
Variety also report that David Lowery is directing the movie which is based on Kevin Powers novel of the same name.
Lowery reveals that the movie will focus on the characters rather than the war they find themselves in:
''I never had any interest in making a war film until Jeff and Evan brought me the novel by Kevin Powers", the filmmaker explains. ''And perhaps I still don't, because while Powers' story takes place during wartime, it isn't about the conflict. It is about characters who find themselves caught up in war, but who struggle to not let it define them".

"I fell in love with them. It is a beautiful and deeply personal tale, relayed through images and memories, and I am excited to have the chance to bring it to the screen.''
Cumberbatch's career has gone from strength to strength since he starred in mega blockbuster hit Star Trek: Into Darkness last summer.
Next up, the Brit will play Alan Turing, the man who helped crack the Enigma Code during WW2, in The Imitation Game. He's also just finished shooting the next installment of The Hobbit franchise.
